Urban Haiku Haiku is a form of poetic expression that derives from Zen Buddhism. It uses only three lines, each with a required number of syllables. The Urban Haiku project will combine haiku texts with carefully arranged sequences of images. Haiku and photography, I believe, have much in common. Each attempts to encourage highly distilled "moments of seeing." Each has the power to cut right to the heart of our complex urban experience. Haiku poems often are pretty subtle. But as a photographer friend recently commented, subtlety seems out of place in the urban landscape, especially in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. "This is LA and the grand scale," she said. Welcome to Urban Haiku.
