Metro Intersections

As almost every urban sociologist oberves, the LA metropolitan area is a scattered assortment of neighborhoods, loosely connected by freeways and major streets, avenues, and boulevards. This view of the area was strongly endorsed by LA voters and officials when they created a web of overlapping Neighborhood Councils. No one seemed interested where particular neighborhoods began and ended. But they were very interested in the fact that the area's residents felt strongly attached to these neighborhoods--often more intensely than they did to their own cities.

This photographic project documents major metropolitan intersections--intersections that have histories in the area's collective memory and that are identified with particular neighborhoods. My hope is that this project will create a kind of narrative/pictorial quilt, each patch characterizing a place in our vast metropolis that has its own mood and spirit. .
